Aspen ArtWeek returned in 2024 with a robust series of newly commissioned performances and unexpected conversations from July 30 to August 3.
To celebrate the museum’s 45th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of its Shigeru Ban-designed building, for the first time three figures were honored: architect Shigeru Ban, artist Jacqueline Humphries, and composer and artist Jason Moran.
This year sees a celebration of the museum’s core mission to support artists in the development of bold ideas and to shape the field of art: from the founding of the museum as an artist-led institution 45 years ago; to ArtWeek which debuted in 2021 as a week of free programming for intimate and meaningful artistic engagement; through to today when the ArtCrush gala will provide collaborative support to participating artists by inviting them for the first time to retain a portion of the proceeds from the auction.
Highlights of the week included: a performance of AUDIENCE PLANT 2024 – a concert staged in partnership with Aspen Skiing Company of music by Michael Beharie, Lizzie Fitch, Ashland Mines, Aaron David Ross, and Ryan Trecartin, performed at the summit of Aspen Mountain featuring guest performers from the Aspen Music School, which went from sunset to dusk and welcomed a major crowd of over 600 attendees; a museum rooftop concert by Jason Moran, (including an impromptu duet with Ryan Trecartin whom Moran invited to join him on piano on stage); and a poetry and gong bath performance by Himali Singh Soin and David Soin Tappeser; and a hike led by artist Lena Henke to complementing a suite of her works on view on the museum rooftop.
Talks included conversations between artist Allison Katz and James Meyer, National Gallery Curator of Modern Art; artist and ArtCrush honoree Jacqueline Humphries and The Brick Los Angeles Director Hamza Walker; entrepreneur and collector Craig Robins with art and design writer and historian Camille Okhio on collecting design; and ArtCrush honoree and museum building architect Shigeru Ban with the Serpentine’s Hans Ulrich Obrist.
