In partnership with the Aspen Art Museum, Aspen Filmfest 2026 presents: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT (2026, directed by Quinn Whitney Wilson + Viridiana Lieberman)
About the Film
Though Basquiat has inspired countless portraits, JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT offers something new: the first documentary made with the full participation of his family. Guided by his sisters, the film uses rare home movies and photographs along with his artwork and writings to reveal the complicated, brilliant, and beloved person behind the mythology. From his Brooklyn childhood to his meteoric rise in the 1980s art world, the film explores in intimate detail his upbringing, his restless creativity, relationships, the racism he confronted, and the complexities behind an extraordinary legacy that continues to reverberate through contemporary art and culture.
